QUESTION OF THE DAY

No salon can experience long term growth, stability, and profitability without a team of professionals sharing the same goals and vision. Your business will succeed or fail as a team, period. Teamwork is invaluable. As professionals, we should all do our part to contribute to a team environment. Which brings us to our Question Of The Day:

How would you support a new member of the salon staff who has just come out of school?

We are constantly having new stylist in the salon, and let me tell you it is very hard to find someone to mesh with all our previous stylists. I always try to make them feel welcome by letting them know if they have any questions about anything they can always come to me. Whether it be something about the salon life or their personal life I always the girls to feel like they can talk to me. Its hard coming into a new place and not knowing anyone we’ve all been in that position so I don’t want any new person to feel uncomfortable.

  2. Any new stylist that comes to our salon goes through our Associate Training Program. They are working with an Educator (Higher level stylist) for 6-9 months before they go onto the floor. This enable them to (and us) to know if they are the right fit and learn 10 years of business and styling skills in 6-9 months. It has worked AMAZING for us!

I started at a new salon with no money in my pocket and barely a handful of really good clients. The salon owner came to me one day and told me she recently switched color lines and had a box of color. She asked me if I wanted it. It looked like a popsicle in 105* weather. Lol I of course excepted it. It got me through those first initial clients so I could purchase more. Now I work at one of the top salons in my city and have a fabulous clientele. I recently had the opportunity to help a young lady who is fresh out of beauty school. I simply gave her a box of color. The look on her face was priceless. Also any time she says “can I talk out this color formulation with you”? I always make the time to listen. Being a supporter of each other and working as a team is vital.

  4. Pick the best school first. Then worry about your job or salon. Most leilky your school will help to place you in a high end salon. Go with a high end school, like Paul Mitchell or Vidal Sasson. You will learn more current techniques at a school like that. Tony and Guy, Aveda, or Redken also are good. Being a hairstylist is a struggle in the beginning, but stick with it and you will love it!
