We Want Your Hair Questions For Sam Villa

The success of our weekly Q&A with Sam Villa video series has been outstanding. We’d like to extend a special thanks to everyone that participated and asked questions the first time we went into the studio to film this series. We hope that you have  learned something new each week!

With that, we’re happy to announce that we will be back in the studio on December 7th and we need your hair questions again! Post your questions here at the blog or at the Sam Villa Facebook Page and yours could be the next answered in the Q&A series!

We welcome all questions about consultation, design, finishing, techniques and more. However, Sam is not a colorist so please do not post questions related to color as they won’t be answered.

Thanks for your participation and we hope to have lots of questions to choose from!

    Sam,
Any tips on how to texturize extremely coarse and curly hair to reduce weight and width but not lose length, especially that hair that likes to get a “shelf” when it’s layered?

  2. Hi Sam,
I would like to know how to layer around the face using swelling graduation and not get a gap where I have to free hand to blend. I have tried adjusting the finger angle and that helped but still get somewhat of a gap. Can you help?

I did your fine hair zip zag cut and then afterwards I wondered how would she curl iron it and style it herself. Can you share the styling of the cut. I forget the name you used of the cut but you do huge zig zag and then either cut from the wide or skinny side depending on the thickness-lots of trees/ or not to many trees-smile.

  5. Hi Sam. I would love some pointers on how to blend cowlicks & whirls. Thanks! Love your Q&A videos!

  6. Hi Sam,

There are so many ways to achieve long layers throughout the back. What is the simplest way for you?

  7. Hi Sam,
I just watched the BOBology DVD and I loved it. I would like to know how you would section and cut the hair if the client wants to angle forward both the right and left sides. Would you do a complete horseshoe section or use the same partings and simply do a half twist on the left side as well? Thanks!

  8. What’s the easiest way to get an even blunt cut. Sometimes i have problems with the front being either shorter or longer than the back.

  9. Hi Sam,

Here’s my conundrum, what do you propose in an industry that is over saturated with too many hairdressers and salons? What would you suggest to Independent Contractors, Employees or Boutique Salons who are trying to keep their doors open in this F’d up economy? Raising prices is the same rhetoric I hear from EVERYONE yearly. Doesn’t seem plausible if you want to keep your current clients from hair hopping to someone else who’s price points are lower. And yes, folks will do that.

In addition, I’ve noticed in my demographic, the salons who cater to ethnic clients are always making bank but those clients are RACIST towards others who aren’t the same as themselves – I’ve unfortunately witnessed this first hand. “That white girl can’t do black hair!”

Hey, people are people, skin is skin, hair is hair and money is green is my Motto. I just want to be able to keep slinging some colour, hair and makeup on folks w/o fear of not being able to make rent. Again, my area is Miserably over saturated with too many hairdressers and salons – a lot of folks that shouldn’t even be working in this industry for their lack of passion for this noble profession.

Thank you, I hope you can give myself and anyone else a plausible answer to wrap our minds around this specific issue.
So what are you thoughts on those points? Yes, I am frustrated about my situation and the economy in general but continue to keep on trucking…for as long as possible.

  10. Hey Sam! I too would live some tips onthick coarse hair that want weight removed, maybe even layers without losing length. Removing bulk without a self and so it moves!!!

    Thanks a bunch!!!

  11. I’m always looking for new ideas on how to frame the face on long hair (not the fringe- the sides), I seem to do it the same way every time and would really love to see a few tricks or techniques that you use. Looking forward to more Q&A videos!!

  12. I have been in the business a great number of years and love love love my career…started from 18 and now 66….this is a question of how to address a health issue you face that would require you to be out of circulation for apron. eight weeks. For me it is hip replacement surgery.
How do you address this conversation with your clients without feeling so obliged that you cut your recovery time short and get back to your clients.
I have found most of my clients kind and understanding but hair being hair… I am selfish and fearful….I think I need more input for myself than the clients….but would really like both…thanks sam…

  13. Hello! I was wonder whats the best way to cut behind the ear without creating a hole. I have directed the hair back towards the shoulder and a few other tricks but sometimes seem to end up with a hole. Help!

  14. Hello again! How do you get someone out of the mullet stage and get them to grow there hair out into a more modern style? I have a few clients who insist on the hair around there ear, very short on top (1-2 inches in length), very layered, and a long length. Mullet correct? Ive tried multiple times to tell them to grow it out maybe go with longer layers and that it would be modern, but it hasn’t worked for me! What do you suggest?

  18. HELP! 2 Questions (I’d love to hear your response!)

    1) How can I give lift on the top of the head when the client has very fine, thin hair and refuses to use product or a round brush (cutting technique when doing a pixie)

    2) What is the best way to handle thick, coarse, poking-straight-out-from-the-head hair on a man’s haircut for over the ears to the front hairline?

  19. Hey Sam,

I can’t for the life of me cut hair around the ear in less than 10 minuets. Its skilling my speed which kills my profit! any ideas to help speed things up?

  20. Sam,

What is your best advise to a cosmetology student getting ready to face the big world of hair. I am 54 years old and will be graduating from cosmetology school in a couple of months. This is something that I have always wanted to do, but financially was not able to until I got laid off this past January. I love love love everything I am learning and feel that I do a very good job so far. When moving to a salon, do you recommend hourly? commission or renting? Thanks Sam!!!!

  24. Hi Sam!
I absolutely love styling. Updos are my favorite and if I could get into the world of fashion I’d be in heaven. What’s your best advice for getting out there and being a known stylist for Bridal hair? Is it just self promotion or do you think teaming up with wedding planners is better? I just want to start getting my foot into the door of up styles and such. Thanks so much!

  25. HI SAM
I’ve been a fan for a long time and this is the first time I’ve written, my question is,I ALWAYS FEEL PUSHY WHEN RECOMMENDING A PRODUCT AFTER A SERVICE, HOW DO I GET OVER THIS? THERE HAS TO BE A BETTER WAY OF RECOMMENDING A PRODUCT AND NOT HAVE THE CLIENT FEEL BULLIED INTO IT?
Thank you for all the great videos and help over the years.

  26. Thanks for the amazing education! As for questions, 1)I’d like to know the tricks for a perfect men’s brush back. 2)I’d also like to hear your sectioning recommendation for the bobology cut when the client prefers a more symmetrical look.

    Thanks!!

  27. I would like for you to demonstrate how to properly cut dry hair into layers. I love all your work and you , your youtube and your website are all my mentors. lol. I love you!

as a student trying to master basic haircutting technique, how can I maintain proper tension with my bony fingers? I feel like the hair slips through my fingers and when I try to adjust my finger position, I feel like it might be too much tension.

Hi Sam! I have a terrible time with static. Can you help me. I have tried different things even my sanitation on my brushes. I seem to be the only one in my salon that gets with my clients. I sometime think there must be something areating off of me.LOL!

  31. Sam, I feel as though sanitation gets overlooked even by the best stylist. Hair in brushes, messy stations, dirty mirrors! I use your Denman style brushes because they are so easy to clean I love them! Please pass on why sanitation is so important for stylist to keep it clean. Thanks

  33. Hello Sam,
My question of the year is: What can I do with people that have hair, after shampoo and conditioner, that feels very dry. The touch is very dry and straw feeling. But as I start to dry it it becomes very soft. What are they lacking? Thanks

  34. Hi Sam,
My question to you is , Sometimes after I do a womans hair and blow dry I notice in the when I section to blow dry the hair parts down the middle. How do I get rid of that part? I find myself constantly blowing drying to get rid of it . Sometimes clients tell me it’s when they a apply color to that same spot all the time. Help, I know you have the answer. Thanks Hope Mcgettigan

  35. Sam, I’ve noticed the wedge cut coming back, I’m a younger stylist though and Ive been taught so much to blend blend blend! I feel a little lost and don’t know where to start when cutting a modernized wedge- I think I do something different every time! Any pointers on this?? Thanks!!

  36. Sam, I am new in the industry, and would like to know how to cut a a-line stacked bob, and the old justin bieber “Shag” haircut. Any advice?? Thanks!

  37. Hi Sam, i so appreciate all that you have done for our industry. I have been in the business for 32 years now and have always struggled on how to cut a mans (or womans) nape area when they have the “rolls” and “valleys” in their skin. The short cuts show the dark and light and i dont like sending them out the door with my name on their their cut.

    Hi Sam,

I’m a cosmetology student about ready to graduate and I have two regular clients with extremely curly hair who both like short cuts with height on top. They like the hair blown straight, not worn curly. What is the best way to blend the back? I have been doing a modified round layering and some vertical panels in the back with the hair a little closer cut at the nape. It turns out okay, but I spend alot of time after it’s dry trying to blend.

  39. Hi Sam,

I’m a cosmetology student, I recently had a client where my instructor did the haircut, when when she started to cute around the ear 90 degree she noticed a whole in the ear when she released the hair..What happened? and what is the best way to cut around the ear without losing length? my teacher didn’t really know what happened.

  40. Handling Mullets… a few of my clients with curly hair tell me “I want to keep the length but go pretty short on top and feather the sides”. It ends up looking like a mullet every time. How do I handle the face framing of this haircut? Or overall how would YOU handle this cut?

    Dear Sam,

I have a mature client who has very fine hair and lacks volume on the top (crown) of her head. I noticed that the crown of her head was flat and the hair falls flat there everytime. Can you suggest a way to create volume in that area where the head shape is not helping at all?

  42. Dear Sam,
I heard that your hair and nails can continue to grow up to TWO years after you die!!! Fact or Crap???!!!!
