Part 1: Direction of Hair

Sam looks at the latest hair trends in this new series called ‘What’s the Buzz’. In this episode Sam looks at the emerging trends of movement, contrasting textures and unstructured styles. Sam also takes a look at the current trends for dressing hair, including how the braid or plait has become a popular Prom hairstyle.

Let’s talk about What’s the Buzz. Where’s the direction of hair going Sam? What’s happening with hair now. At the moment, whether it’s about waves, curls, texture or frizz, movement is big. Think 70’s and 80’s disco glamour. Interesting how we reach back to the past, we bring it forward, but we give it a little bit of a twist, and we make it a little more modern and fresh. Curls are popular and are best created using a combination of textures. Undone, imagine this, undone meets high maintenance to give an unstructured type of curl. Interesting in terms of, everything at one time was very balanced and quaffed and now things have a more natural, organic kind of feel to them. The story continues in terms of, I want you to think about frizzy and wavy hair combined with sleek roots and sleek ponytails. A contrast of textures working together. Extreme textures working together to provide that contrast. Interesting, imagine something very sleek into a ponytail and then the ponytail is frizzed out. Nowadays it’s very pleasing to the eye to see something like that. Dressing. When we dress the hair, we put it up. What are we doing with it? You’re seeing a lot more buns. In fashion week we saw a lot more buns, lots of chignons, the idea of plaiting the hair. When I say plait, what do I mean by a plait? A braid, a simple braid. If I could show you how to braid the hair in three minutes, would you be interested? “Yeah, oh yeah”. Come on some of you would be interested. Would you be interested? “Yes!” Awesome, great. Here’s why. You are going to see a lot more plaits. Take a look at that one program ‘The Hills’ and did you see that one girl? All the young girls are coming in asking for that. That little side little braid and then the rest of her hair. Matter of fact, Proms. Think about it. These girls are going to their Proms and they want their hair down, they no longer want it up. Interesting isn’t it how things catch on based on an icon. Extreme textures working together to provide that contrast. Dressing, buns, chignons, plaits and rolls, simple rolls. Influenced by vintage glamour. What do I mean by vintage? Vintage? Old, yeah exactly. Remember that word, because I am going to be bringing that word back in terms of talking how to relate that to a client that is reluctant to change what it is that they’re wearing at the moment. It’s about a mixture of traditional techniques and new ideas, with a twist on the classics. Traditional ideas, we are getting back more into discipline.
