Part 4: Hair & Fashion

In this episode of What’s the Buzz, Sam discusses the impact fashion trends have had on the latest trends in hairstyles. Sam shows some surprising pairings seen in today’s fashion world and how these looks are behind hair trends such as disconnection.

Let’s talk about What’s the Buzz. Fashion is a great resource and it’s a great influence. In the years past I had an opportunity to work fashion week and I thank Redken for that great experience that I had because it really opened my eyes to see fashion in a total different sort of way. Fashion today, we’ve being seeing surprising pairings. Surprising pairings. Lady-like yet seductive yet prim and proper. Now let me give you a visual. Image this. Something so seductive. The satin, skin-type, bustier type dress, with something yet so prim and proper. The cardigan sweater. Two fabrics that detach themselves, that disconnect, but now very pleasing to the eye. Let me give you another visual. A beautiful, beautiful chiffon, soft type of fabric, that balloons inside, with a short, cropped leather jacket. Very fashionable right now. Once again, two fabrics that detach and disconnect. So how does that relate to what we are doing with haircuts, ok? Undercutting, underlayering. Taking out the underneath. Taking out sheet of hair and pulling it over it. That would be a pair of jeans underneath with a skirt layered over that. Ok, imagine that. Belts. Belts have become wider. So things are tighter underneath. That would be the belt that just cinched it underneath. Made it tighter and closer to the head underneath. Now I’m taking hair and putting hair over that. So you can see how disconnection is very pleasing now base upon the silhouettes we are looking for, and fashion has been the inspiration for that. Welcome back that whole hippy, sixties. That whole hippy influence of texture. You’re starting to see that. We are starting to see these long, almost moo-moo type of dresses. These 70’s, these 60’s long dresses we use to wear, we’re starting to see that in the summer time. We’re seeing these soft type of fabrics, very chiffon, very very fluid, flowy types of fabrics. With disconnection, the hair has a movement in it that is very loose. They move their head and it moves. That’s what I am looking for in my haircuts. When things are blended through they’re very tight and they’re very structured. They don’t get the sense of volume that they want because things are connected. When they are disconnected its an interchangeable element, which is so cool.
