We asked Sam Villa to give up three tips for creating the perfect shag. Here's how you can rock this out:

  1. If you want to maintain more weight around the perimeter of the cut, take a zigzag section around the hairline and isolate into a ponytail at center back. Depending on the length, you may need more than one ponytail. Layer everything above the zigzag, then release the ponytail. The result is a chunkier edge with maintained weight around the perimeter.
  2. To create a multi-layered medium-length shag, work with disconnected areas of the head in a horizontal fashion, elevated vertically to create tiered layers that are concealed–think sneaky under-cut layers that allow internal hair to move. If the hair is straight and fine, then the razor is key for adding texture.
  3. I like to take an "archway" section in the nape area that works from the corner of hairline, arched below the occipital to the opposite corner of the hairline. Elevate the entire section up vertically and cut horizontally. This will sink the nape area in to encourage more head shape, as seen on Kristen Stewart. It's also a great way to extract weight in the nape area.
