Did you know that you've most likely been relying on muscle memory when cutting hair? It's true! You spend a lot of time practicing and training certain muscles to automatically perform a specific technique.
For example, in the video above, Sam Villa ArTeam member David Boyd uses muscle memory to brace his hand holding the section of hair to be cut on the head, allowing him to cut through the top section of the haircut quicker and easier. Chances are you are probably using this technique already as it can actually come natural to you. Think of it as a way to steady your hand and an easy technique for finding your cutting guides. Developing Muscle Memory:
- Begin at the front hairline to establish the first cut – that will be your guide
- Comb the front section with the wide teeth of the comb
- Decide the length to be removed and cut
NOTE: Once this first cut is made, take a look at the placement of the fingers on the hand holding the comb. This positioning of the hand and fingers will help us find the cutting guide for the next section easier and quicker.
- Comb the hair back and pick up the next section
- To control the hair into the fingers, elevate the hair up to the visual guide created for the first cut
- Use the muscle memory with the fingers and hand below to find that guide a little quicker and easier than the visual guide alone
