First off, let me introduce you to my friend, Nic Mahoskey who was named 2014 World Beard Champion in the Full Beard Verdi Category. We are so honored to have him here with us today…and his beard!
The beard is a timeless and masculine feature on a man. With that said, it’s essential to develop a proper respect for the beard. To grow and maintain a beard takes a great amount of effort and we’ve got some tips to help with both.
The beard is like the hair on our head; it’s a natural organic fiber unlike cotton or wool. So it responds to the same conditions as our hair does, such as heat and moisture.
One of the best times to start grooming and caring for the beard is going to be in the shower and then immediately after you get out. While in the shower, apply Redken All Soft Shampoo and Conditioner to the beard to cleanse and condition while adding shine and softness.
NOTE: Once you step out from the shower keep in mind that the beard is in a prime state to be molded and sculpted because it is still warm and there is still water in it.
Next we will grab our Redken All Soft Heavy Cream and use about a dime sized amount – depending on the length of your beard you can go less or more. Emulsify the cream and apply in the same direction of the growth of the beard, then very lightly start to work the product through.
With the hair still being damp from the shower, we want to begin to shape the beard. We recommend using the Sam Villa Wide Cutting Comb to shape the beard because it’s a wide comb with large teeth so it won't stretch the natural texture of the beard or pull on it.
HOT TIP: Every beard has its own texture and density, so be cautious when combing until you know how tangled and dense the beard is.
After you shape the beard with the comb, next pick up your Styling Brush and begin to work through the beard to shape and finish styling the beard.
One of our favorite tools to use on the beard to really set the shape and style is the Sam Villa Professional Ionic blow dryer with a deep bowl diffuser. The reason we are using the diffuser is to dry the beard while controlling the air flow–because we are working on the face, the controlled air flow will allow us to set the shape and style of the beard without creating frizz.
Turning the dryer on medium heat and low air flow, come right in with your hand behind the beard to ensure we are getting a good gauge of the heat that’s created by the dryer. The combination of products and blow dry will ensure the beard dries quicker.
Working with clients with beards I’ve come to learn that half the battle is the care and condition of the beard itself. It’s essential to keep the beard and the skin underneath clean and maintained, this will help with any itching while keeping the beard looking healthy and fresh.
