Feeling Left Out?
DOES LEFT HANDED MEAN LESS IMPORTANT? WE DON'T THINK SO. ALL SHEAR MODELS AT NO EXTRA COST TO YOU.

True Left Handed Shears

Did you know, less than 10% of hair stylists are left handed? Of those, over 65% either use their right hand to cut hair or were trained to use a flipped right handed shear to cut left handed.

Because so few hair stylists actually use left handed shears, there is a smaller selection of true left handed shears made for lefties. In fact, many shear companies produce a limited amount of left handed shears to save on cost, then pass the extra costs to you. Is that fair?

We Don’t Forget About The Lefties

All but two Sam Villa shears are available in true left handed (and those two are coming soon). PLUS, we never charge you more for a true left handed shear.

If you’ve been searching for a brand that supports lefties, then you came to the right place!

How To I Know If I'm Using A True Left Handed Shear

It's simply to tell what kind of shear that you're using – left handed or right handed. Here's how you can tell:

Hold your shears in a normal cutting position directly in front of your body

Take a look at the thumb blade as you open and close the shear (the blade that is controlled by your thumb). If the thumb blade is the back-most blade then you are using a true left handed shear. If the thumb blade is the front-most blade then you're using a flipped right handed shear.

Eliminate Neck & Shoulder Pain

Do you feel pain or soreness in your neck or shoulder while cutting hair? For many stylists this happens because traditional shear handles force you to raise your elbow while cutting hair.

Imagine cutting hair pain-free! It's possible with Sam Villa shears. The ergonomic forward set thumb position on Sam Villa shears forces your elbow down while you cut, eliminating neck and shoulder pain.

Carpal Tunnel & Repetitive Strain Injury

Left handed hair stylists are susceptible to serious, even career-ending hand and wrist injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome and repetitive strain injury (RSI).

Remember above how we showed you how to determine if you're using a true left handed shear or a flipped right handed shear? Here's what that is important.

If you're left handed using a flipped right handed shear, you need to be especially aware of repetitive strain injuries. Why? When using a flipped right handed shear the thumb blade is the front-most blade. To open and close the shear without pushing or folding the hair, you need to create friction against the back blade. In order to do this you need to pull the thumb blade toward your body as you cut. This places a great deal of pressure on your thumb tendon and can quickly lead to carpal tunnel syndrome and other RSI symptoms.

Because of this, we strongly recommend that left handed hair stylists use a true left handed shear. Doing so will move the thumb blade to the back of the shear, allowing you to push against the thumb blade instead of pull to cut. Not only will this relieve pressure on your thumb tendon, but it will allow you to cut in many different positions with your elbow lowered at your side which reduces neck and shoulder pain as well.

Swivel Clear Of Pain

For even more enhanced ergonomics and comfort, a swivel shear is an excellent choice!

Swivel shears allow you to cut in any position with your elbow at your side.

Learning how to use a swivel shear will force your hand and body into a much more relaxed and natural position. When cutting three or more heads of hair per day, it can make a huge difference in the longevity of your career as a cutter.
