Braided Flower Bun

When it comes to braiding... the possibilities are endless!

Jenny Strebe, creator of Confessions of a Hairstylist, shows us how to combine different braids to create a braided flower bun.

Let's begin!

First off, it’s essential for every up style, that you begin with a good foundation. I suggest you add grip to the up style by using a volume mousse and concentrating at the base while blow drying the hair.

Begin by sectioning off the hair from the bottom of the occipital bone down to behind each ear and clip away for later.

Take a small triangle section from the crown to the tips on the eye brows. Split the hair in half, and utilize a loose fishtail braiding technique.

As you work down the fishtail braid, you are going to pick up hair from outside the section you are holding and cross over.

NOTE: You will not be braiding with any of the hair from the two strands you are holding, only feeding in new hair and crossing over.

Repeat this technique until you get to the tips of the ears.

Secure the loose fishtail braid to the head around the occipital bone with bobby pins.

Release the bottom section, and create two small side ponytails underneath the loose fishtail braid. Secure the ponytails with a clear elastic.

Beginning with the left ponytail, create a simple three strand braid.

Pancake the braid as you are braiding the hair. We are ONLY going to pancake the outside of the left braid. To "pancake" a braid, gently pull the braid out to loosen it. Remember we are only loosening the one side of this braid, you will see why further on.

After you have the left braid complete, repeat the same steps on the right side. When working on the right braid, we will only want to pancake the outside of the right braid.

Now that you have completed both braids, take the braid to the left and roll into a tight small bun. It's important that the pancaked part of the bun is on the outside, secure with bobby pins. This will be our inner flower bud.

Now take your right braid and wrap around the first braided floral bun. Again, make sure that the pancaked side is on the outer side. Secure with bobby pins.

For a softer texture, use a flexible hold hairspray and lightly spray for added texture and hold. Using the palms of your hands, gently massage the hair out for a wispy texture.
